Dental Implants

The new alternative for the replacement of missing teeth

A dental implant is a small titanium screw that is inserted into the jawbone to replace the missing tooth root. Once integrated, a crown can be secured to the top of the implant. This artificial tooth, looks, feels and performs just like your natural teeth. It is also possible to use multiple implants to support a bridge or a denture.

Implants offer benefits that bridges and dentures do not offer:

Implant secured, replacement teeth are more comfortable and provide a better performance than traditional dentures. There is no slipping or movement when you bite down allowing you to eat and chew with confidence.

Dental implants are better than bridgework at replacing missing teeth because they eliminate the need to grind down healthy teeth on either side of the gap.
When teeth are missing the surrounding bone begins to shrink. Dental implants preserve bone integrity. There is no bone loss similar to what you see with bridgework, were over time a gap develops underneath the false tooth.

The implant process may be a little long but people are often surprise at how little discomfort or pain they experience.

Initial Assessment:

At the initial appointment, Dr. Kwan will discuss your treatment options to replace your missing tooth or teeth. This includes bridgework, dentures and implants. X-rays may be taken and preliminary models may be prepared. A written plan will be formulated detailing the sequence of events and associated costs.

Implant Placement:

Dr. Kwan will perform a relatively simple minor surgical procedure under local anaesthesia to place the implant in your jawbone. If after assessment, the underlying bone is judged to be insufficient to support the implant, a bone graft may be necessary to regenerate the bone before placing the implant. The bone graft may be carried out prior to, or at the same time as the implant placement.

Integration Period:

Although some implants can be loaded into function immediately or soon after surgery, Dr. Kwan often suggests that a period of 3-6 months be allowed for the implant to fully integrate with the bone before loading it. Your own denture or a simple adhesive bridge can be worn during this healing phase.

The Restoration Phase:

once the implant has integrated with the bone, it can be brought into function with a variety of restorations. It can be loaded at the top with a single crown, small or large bridge or if you prefer; a removable Overdenture affixed to the implants.

Maintenance:

Following the completion of your implant treatment, you will need to follow our recommended hygiene program. You will need to clean the implant thoroughly as instructed by the hygienist. You will also need to attend regular professional cleanings and checkups so that the health of the soft tissue, bone levels and integrity of the restoration are not threatened.
